First Lego League CompetitionFor the first time, students in the Jackson Purchase area who love Legos and robots will participate in a regional Legos competition, and they dont have travel to a long way do it! A First Lego League Competition (FLL) will be held at West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) on Saturday, December 14.
Before Saturdays competition on the WKCTC campus, area elementary and middle school students who participated in a league competition had to travel as far as Bowling Green for a tournament. The WKCTC competition will be held in the Emerging Technology Center from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Over 200 participants are expected to attend the competition; including more than 100 area elementary and middle school students comprising six to ten person FLL teams, as well as volunteers, judges and spectators. Participating student teams will represent Calloway, Fulton, Marshall and McCracken counties, as well as St. Mary, Hopkinsville and various private schools.
The students will design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology, apply real-world math and science concepts, research challenges facing todays scientists, learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills, and participate in future tournaments and celebrations.
FLL is part of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international robotics program for students thats sole purpose is to get young people excited about science, technology, and engineering while teaching them valuable life skills at the same time.
The media is encouraged to attend Saturdays competition. The days agenda is as follows:
- 9:30 a.m. - opening ceremony
- 10:00 a.m. - practice matches
- 11:15 a.m. - competition matches
- 11:55 a.m.-1:15 p.m. - lunch break
- 1:15-2:25 p.m. - competition matches
- 3:00 p.m. - closing ceremony
