First Middle School Academic Tournament at WKCTC
More than 70 middle school students participated in a West Kentucky Academic Bowl
competition at West Kentucky Community and Technical College on November 19. This
was the first middle school tournament held at the college. The competition was a
practice run for next years district and regional academic bowls to be held in other
parts of the state.
Calloway County, Paducah Tilghman, Lone Oak, St. Mary, Carlisle County, Reidland, and Caldwell County participated in the competition.
Calloway County took first place honors going undefeated. Lone Oak came in second, followed by Paducah Tilghman, and Reidland for third and fourth place, respectively.
Gary Goodaker, WKCTC mathematics professor and high school vice president of the West Kentucky Academic Association (WKAA), organized the first time event. Weve had great success at the high school level, and we wanted to provide these students with the same opportunity to compete on our campus, Goodaker said.
WKAA Middle School Vice President Lori Herndon agreed. Because the college is centrally located for the participating schools, these students got the chance to compete against each other, which is something that doesnt happen until they get to the regional level, she said. Being on campus opened the door for them to get a taste of college life, and we hope that it will help them start thinking about the future.
Academic team members from Marshall County and Paducah Tilghman high schools were the judges and moderators for the competition. This was an excellent leadership opportunity for these students, and they set a good example for the middle school teams, said Brandon Cayton, Marshall County academic coach.
Area high schools will compete for the Presidents Cup at WKCTC on January 6, 2011.
