WKCTC President Barbara Veazey announced that West Kentucky Community and Technical College received a $5,000 donation from the estate of Ben Whiteaker of Paducah. Whiteaker, 88, died in October 2010, and left donations to several area educational and non-profit organizations.

Mr. Whiteaker was a long time advocate of education, said Bud Qualk, vice president and trust officer at Independence Bank. He wanted to give to the institutions that make a difference to our community.

Qualk and Eileen Duobinis-Gray, vice president and senior trust office at Independence Bank, presented a check to officials at the college Wednesday. Its wonderful that citizens like Mr. Whiteaker step forward and remember the college and support its programs and services, said Kay Travis, Paducah Junior College, Inc. executive director. PJC, Inc. is the foundation of WKCTC.

A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Whiteaker was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and a United States Navy veteran. He came to Paducah in 1950 when he began work as a chemist at Union Carbide.
