Polysomongraphy Program at WKCTC Accepting Applications for the Spring

The polysomnography program at West Kentucky Community amp; Technical College is the first polysomnography program in Kentucky to receive accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

There are only 24 CAAHEP polysomnography programs in the United States. The college is currently accepting applications for students interested in possibly being in the next polysomnography class that begins in January. Space is limited and enrollment is based on a selective process.

Polysomnography technology is the health care field where individuals use sleep study to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. In the fall 2008, the respiratory care program at WKCTC began offering a certificate in polysomnography technology.

A sleep study is used to gather extensive data concerning an individuals physiologic activity while sleeping, by measuring such things as breathing efforts, blood oxygen levels, electrical activity of the brain (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), eye movement (ROC and LOC), and muscle activity (EMG). Sleep Technologists make recommendations to physicians specifically trained in Sleep Medicine so that patients can receive appropriate therapy to treat discovered sleep disorders.
