WKCTC Hosts Academic CompetitionMore than 100 students from eleven area middle schools participated in a Second Annual West Kentucky Academic Association (WKAA) competition at West Kentucky Community and Technical College, Friday, November 18. The competition was a practice run for next years district and regional academic bowls to be held in other parts of the state.
Carlisle County, Heath (blue/red team), Calloway County (blue/red team), Lone Oak, Reidland, Caldwell County, Paducah (blue/red team), Hickman County, St. Mary, and North and South Marshall participated in the competition.
Lone Oak took first place honors. Calloway County (red team) came in second, followed by Paducah Middle (blue team) and Reidland for third and fourth place, respectively.
Gary Goodaker, WKCTC mathematics professor and WKAA high school vice president and co-organizer of the annual event and is excited about the growth in the competition. Our first middle school academic bowl was a great success, and more teams wanted to participate this year, Goodaker said. We had to expand to four preliminary rounds just to keep up growing interest in the competition.
Goodaker said the high level of participation shows that the local middle schools want to promote academic success through competition and the students seem to really enjoy being the WKCTC campus.
WKAA Middle School Vice President Laura Herndon agreed. Because the college is centrally located for the participating schools, these students got the chance to compete against each other, which is something that doesnt happen until they get to the regional level, she said. Being on campus opened the door for them to get a taste of college life, and allowed them to experience what WKCTC has to offer.
Academic team members from Heath and Paducah Tilghman high schools were the judges and moderators for the competition. This was an excellent leadership opportunity for these students, and they set a good example for the middle school teams, said Herndon.
Area high schools will compete for the Presidents Cup at WKCTC on January 5, 2012.
