MSU Accelerate U!

Accelerate U!

What is Accelerate U! (AU!)?

AU! is a partnership between Murray State University (MSU) and West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) designed to support and advance students seeking full admission to MSU. The program is designed to promote student success while students take first-year courses with WKCTC and MSU on MSU’s Murray campus.

AU! students are provided layers of support, particularly in the key academic areas of writing, reading, and math. Students in the fall of 2019 have the option to live and dine on-campus at MSU, promoting a sense of belonging to MSU. With successful completion of AU!, students will become full MSU students in their second year.

How do I join AU!?
Participation in the Accelerate U! program is by invitation only from MSU. If you wish to join AU! all you need to do is complete the acceptance form provided by MSU.

For more information, contact Dr. Tyra Henderson at 270.534.3396 or Dr. Shauna Mullins at 270.809.2667. Both can help you accept your invitation to participate in AU!

  • Your AU! experience will be almost indistinguishable from that of any other Murray State student. The differences are in the academic supports AU! students will receive through their WKCTC courses and success coach(es).

  • Although you will take classes on MSU’s Murray campus, your AU! academic home will be WKCTC. You will take nine to thirteen credit hours with WKCTC and at least three credit hours with MSU each semester.

  • Your class schedule will follow MSU’s calendar and you will be provided a specific AU! calendar for specific important dates.

  • You will have a WKCTC email account and a MSU email account. You will also use WKCTC’s student portal (Student Self-Serve) and MSU’s student portal (MyGate) to track your personal information and academic progress. Financials will also be available through these portals.
  • You will be a member of an AU! cohort. This means that you and your 20 – 30 AU! peers will be in the same classes together each day. This will allow you to build relationships with your classmates and to develop support and friendships outside of regular class time.

  • MSU and WKCTC have worked together to select courses for the AU! program. Courses were selected to promote student success, to provide foundational skills for future college coursework, to ensure complete transferability, and to advance students toward completion of their Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees.

  • You will have classes each day, beginning as early at 8:00 am and ending as late as 3:30 pm.

  • You will spend approximately 14 hours each week in class and support time. In addition to time in the classroom, college students are expected to spend as many as three hours on work outside of class (homework and studying) for each hour in class. This equates to a full-time job of 40+ hours of work on academics in a week.

  • Support services in key areas are included in your class schedule and are a requirement of the program. AU! faculty and staff from WKCTC and MSU will monitor your progress and assistance will be provided when needed.
  • You will have scheduled support time each week in key areas, such as writing, math, and reading. The support time will be scheduled with your class instructors and success coach. Support times are meant to expand on class content, address weaknesses related to class content, and to teach effective strategies for college success.
  • Your success coach is not a traditional classroom instructor or professor, but is instead a staff member who serves as mentor, coach, tutor, and advisor to AU! students.
  • Your success coach will sometimes be in the classroom along with your class instructor/professor. You will also see your coach during scheduled support times and in drop-in meetings and informal get-togethers.

To be eligible to transfer as a full MSU student in year two, you must successfully complete the AU! program which takes place in the fall and spring semesters of your first year of college. To successfully complete AU!, you are expected to:

  • Earn a minimum of 24 credit hours,
  • Earn a C or higher in your English and math courses, and
  • Earn a minimum 2.0 GPA.
  • Participation in the Accelerate U! program is by invitation only. If you wish to join AU! all you need to do is complete the acceptance form provided by MSU.
