West Kentucky Community and Technical College provides the necessary coursework to prepare for teacher education programs at all of Kentucky's major universities. Students who wish to become teachers will need to take the PRAXIS I exam prior to applying to a Teacher Education Program and have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Each WKCTC education course requires that students observe classrooms in public education. 100 level courses require 10 hours of observation, and 200 level courses require a minimum of 15 hours of observation. These required observation hours count toward the 200 hours necessary in order to apply for student teaching in the senior year.

WKCTC has articulation agreements with Murray State University which identify the specific WKCTC courses necessary for the Associate in Arts (A.A.) and Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees and for transferring into their program. Please meet with your advisor to determine exact transfer requirements.

Length of Program
You can earn an associate in applied science degree in two years if you maintain full-time status.
This information should not be considered a substitute for the KCTCS Catalog. You should always choose classes in cooperation with your faculty advisor to ensure that you meet all degree requirements.
Continue Your Journey
Students will need to transfer to a four-year school where they can obtain their certification as a teacher. This will ultimately require testing based upon the requirements of the Educational Standards Board of Kentucky. A background check is required in addition to liability insurance for students in this program.
