Selective Admissions for Medical Laboratory Technician Program

Twelve students are selected every year with alternate positions.  Admission is a selective process and attendance to an information session prior to admission is required, which will provide a vast amount of information on the program.  In addition to the information session, the following must be completed:

  • Apply for admission to West Kentucky Community & Technical College if not currently enrolled.
  • Submit an official transcript of all previous college work.
  • Submit ACT or SAT scores.
  • Pre-requisites to be completed with a ā€œCā€ or above prior to the start of the program.
  • Selective Admission points

The pre-requisites that are required to be completed with a ā€œCā€ or above prior to the start of the program are:

  • BIO 135 or higher (Please contact program coordinator before registering for an A&P course)
  • MAT 110 or higher
  • CHEM 130 or higher (CHEM 140 recommended)
  • MLT 101

BIO 225, PHB 170 and PHB 152 are co-requisites and can be completed in the 1st semester of the program after admission with PHB 170 taken prior to PHB 152. 

Point System

Points are calculated in the following three areas. Applicants are ranked according to points earned. A maximum of 40 points are possible.

2. GPA in 10 hours of college credit applicable to the MLT credential applicant is seeking: Total points possible = 10

  • Anatomy and Physiology I (BIO 135 or higher)
  • Communications
  • Computer Literacy
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Writing I
  • Psychology 110
  • Heritage / Humanities
  • Chem 130 or Higher
  • Applied Phlebotomy PHB 170
  • Phlebotomy Practicum PHB 152

3. Biological and Physical Sciences and Mathematics Grades

Grades will be evaluated from each of the following pre-requisite courses. Total points possible = 20:

  • CHE 130 or higher

High School Transcript verifying graduation or GED official score report and Official Transcripts of all post secondary education credentials must be submitted.

Only final course grades in classes completed by the end of the Spring semester will be used in calculating selective admission points. In the event of duplicate point total, final applicant will be determined by cumulative grade point average (GPA).
