WKCTC Named Aspen Prize Semifinalist

Recognized among the nation’s top community colleges for student success

Read the Announcement

Being named a Semifinalist for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence is a significant national recognition. Awarded by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, the Aspen Prize honors community colleges that demonstrate outstanding student success, including strong outcomes in teaching, completion, transfer, and workforce achievement.

As a semifinalist, WKCTC is among a select group of institutions nationwide competing for the prestigious award and a share of $1 million in prize funds. This distinction reflects high performance and positions your institution as a leader in delivering meaningful results for students and the community.

Yes! We’ve not only done this before, we’ve built a strong track record of national recognition through the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program.

Over the years, our college has repeatedly advanced deep into the Aspen Prize process:

2011: Top 5 – Finalist with Distinction
2013: Top 10 – Finalist
2015: Top 5 – Finalist with Distinction
2017: Top 10 – Finalist
2021: Top 5 – Finalist with Distinction

Now, in 2027, we’ve once again earned national recognition as a Semifinalist for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

This consistent recognition highlights a long-standing commitment to student success and places our college among a select group of institutions that continue to lead at the national level.

The Aspen Prize process, led by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, begins with a broad national pool and becomes increasingly selective at each stage.

Nearly 1,000 community colleges across the U.S. are initially reviewed based on student outcomes. From there:

  • About 200 colleges are invited to apply
  • Only 20–25 are named semifinalists
  • Just 10 advance to finalist status
  • And ultimately, one winner is selected

Being named a semifinalist means WKCTC is already in a very small, highly competitive group. (Roughly the top 2–3% of community colleges nationwide.)

Following the semifinalist announcement, the selection committee takes a closer look. They review data, applications, and leadership interviews before narrowing the field to 10 finalists. From there, one college will ultimately be awarded the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.
