Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa is a place where students can build on their success! Phi Theta Kappa, a prestigious honor society, makes this success for millions of college students through scholarships, fellowship, leadership and service the hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa.
With over three million members inducted since its founding, and 134,000 inducted annually, Phi Theta Kappa is the only honors organization recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges.
The Phi Theta Kappa chapter at West Kentucky Community and Technical College is the Iota Eta Chapter, established in 1957.
Chapter activities vary each year, depending upon the direction of chapter leaders.
Past activities have included hosting a College Completion Fair, a Cupcake Wars fundraiser, participation in research for the Honors Topic, and an international birthday party for the college community.
Each fall and spring semester, invitation letters are mailed to eligible members.
To be eligible for membership, a student must:
- Be currently enrolled, part-time or full-time, in a degree-seeking program;
- Have completed at least 12 credit hours;
- Have achieved at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA.
In the invitation letter, students will receive information about how to enroll using the online membership application. There is a one-time membership fee of $70.00, payable online. Once students become members, they must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
Why would you want to be a PTK member?
Benefits include:
- official recognition of your academic achievements through wearing of an honors stole during the graduation ceremony,
- access to scholarships available at transfer institutions,
- opportunities to publish in Phi Theta Kappas anthology, Note Bene, and
- networking with other members to develop leadership skills.
My GPA is 3.49, can I still become a member? Unfortunately, no. Membership is only available to those with a 3.50 cumulative GPA. However, when your cumulative GPA rises to at least 3.50, you will then become eligible.
When is the deadline to join? Each semester, invitation letters are mailed to eligible students. The deadline is indicated on that letter, in order to be able to compile a press release during the semester with names of new members.
I cannot pay the membership fee, are there funds available to help? Unfortunately the chapter does not have funds available to help students pay their membership fee.
Do I have to participate in club activities to maintain membership? There is no requirement that students participate in activities. However, it is to the students advantage to be involved as a way to enhance your college experience.
When are chapter meetings? There are no set times for chapter meetings. Days and times will vary depending on availability for students that wish to be engaged in the activities.
